Child & Family Information Referral & Support Team
Child FIRST provides a single entry point into family services for vulnerable children and their families. Children and families can be offered earlier support, with the aim of preventing reports to Department of Human Services, Child Protection Unit.
The need to protect children from harm and promote their development needs to be a shared community responsiblity.
What does Child FIRST do?
The core functions of Child FIRST are:
- Information and advice;
- Initial screening and assessment;
- Risk and needs assessment;
- Prioritising the need for service;
- Referral to Family Services or other services;
- Consultation with the Community Based Child Protection Worker where appropriate.
Child FIRST will build much stronger linkages and pathways with existing community services to support children's development and wellbeing.

A person who has a significant concern for the wellbeing of an unborn child, a child or a young person up to and including 17 years of age.
